GLASS TILE INSTALLATION - KEY POINTS
Put down enough thin-set. If you do not use a sufficient amount of thin-set, the tile will not set level in the
bed, and it may pull out during tape removal. Further, the substrate (bed) may show through and
appear as shadowing or discoloration in the tile. Glass tile is non-porous and does not discolor. To
keep the tile color true, use a sufficient amount of white thin-set.
Correct thin-set consistency makes a smooth installation possible; the opposite is equally true. In
general, thin-set should be stiff enough to adhere to an upside down trowel but wet enough so that
when touched it sticks to your finger. Use according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Your surface must be a flat plane. Glass tile makes uneven surfaces noticeable, so, whether a
horizontal or vertical installation, having a flat, continuous plane is critical for a beautiful installation.
Translucent tile is a window that shows whatever is behind it. Use only true-white thin-set. Because
our glass tile is translucent, the color of the setting mortar will affect the color of the tile. Gray thin-sets
are not recommended because they will significantly change the color of the tile. Test your thin-set
before you begin to ensure that it cures white enough for your installation.
When using glass tile in a shower pan, make sure that you have proper drainage. Because our glass
tile is translucent, you must create sufficient slope for drainage. In addition, the weep holes in the
drain must not be clogged with cement or mortar. In either of these cases, water will get trapped
beneath the tile and form mold, which will show through the tile as a dark spot. Refer to the Tile
Council of North America’s specifications regarding shower pans to ensure a proper installation.
Let the thin-set cure completely. If it is cold or humid out, your thin-set may require a longer curing time.
If you do not allow the thin-set to cure completely, the tile may pull out during tape removal or appear
as discolored. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly.
Cut the tape into manageable strips. Cut the clear tape into strips along the grout lines to allow for
easier removal. Maintain a low angle when removing the tape to reduce the amount of pull exerted on
the tile.
Choose your tile installer with consideration and care. Make sure that your installer understands how
to install glass tile. Make sure that your installer reads and understands all installation instructions for
the product. Confirm that all products have been inspected and approved of BEFORE installation
begins. The installation of the product signifies acceptance.
Light glass tile to bring its full beauty to life. Proper lighting will significantly enhance the appearance
of our glass tile. This is especially true when the tile has an iridescent finish. Light aimed at a 45
degree angle will make irid tile flash dramatically.
